Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a global reference number that uniquely identifies every legal entity or structure that is a party to a financial transaction in any jurisdiction.   This includes intermediary institutions, banks, mutual funds, partnership companies, trusts, special purpose vehicles, asset management companies, and other institutions that enter into financial transactions.

The LEI is an identity proof of an entity, which is of utmost importance for reporting transactions to trade repositories and abiding by regulatory requirements.
